wayfinding safe spaces
a walkable quilt trail in Jackson Heights by Nikki Kimboko
I am excited to announce a new project happening in Jackson Heights, NY,
this November, supported in part by the Queens Arts Fund.
My project, Here, this is the way: wayfinding safe spaces includes a month-long exhibition of my Here, this is the way quilt map at The World’s Borough Bookshop, Safe Spaces quilt blocks in 12 neighborhood locations, and a FREE community walk to view the twelve pieces in my quilt trail.
The walk will depart from The World’s Borough Bookshop
3406 73rd st. Jackson Heights, NY 11372
Saturday, Nov. 29 at 11am and return for the opening reception.
Opening: The World’s Borough Bookshop
Saturday, Nov. 29, 12:30-2pm
Project will be on view in all locations through December 2025.

My project Here, this is the way: wayfinding safe spaces is a gesture of welcome, a sign of safety in the form of a quilt block.
Over the last few years people across the country have chosen to lead with cruelty. I have answered that bleakness with softness, with care, with connection and color.
Where some have spoken unkindness, I offer warmth and comfort. Where otherness has been verbalized and signaled, I hang signs of belonging. Each block offers a different messages, they show safety can be visible, that welcome can be made by hand.
I hope all who wander with curiosity, will follow the map from one Safe Space to the next, finding beauty, connection, and a quiet message: you are welcome here.
Follow the map and find safe spaces.
